Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do is a martial arts style developed by Bruce Lee. It is not a system, but a set of principles. Everyone develops their own particular style, depending on what they feel their particular strengths and weaknesses are.

Panantukan Kali (Filipino boxing)

This is a Filipino style of boxing. Sifu Dan Inosanto is a famous advocator of this style.

Thai Boxing/ Muay Thai

This is also known as the “art of 8 limbs”. This is due to the use of fists, elbows, feet and knees. There are 8 points of contact to attack the opponent. The whole body is used when executing a move, by twisting at the hips to ensure the whole body weight is behind each strike.

Karate

Karate is the well known martial arts style which is practised in Japan. There are many different styles; one is to be practised like an art, another as a self defence style and a third as a full combat sport. There is a lot of emphasis on kata, (the basic moves of karate), before going on to spar with others, either with, or without full contact.

Judo

Judo also originates in Japan. It is classed as a modern martial arts, emphasising movements such as throws and takedowns.

Silat

Silat is a combination of martial arts practised in South East Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. There are many different styles, each one focusing on different aspects of combat. Some may focus on striking methods, some on particular weapons, such as the karambit and some on joint manipulations.

Kickboxing

Kickboxing is a style which focuses on striking the opponent with fists and legs. It is a competitive sports and can also be adapted to modern day self-defence.

SELF-PROTECTION

A common misconception about self-defence is that it is mainly physical aspects such as punches, kicks and throws. We teach that fighting is the last resort. In our unique method of teaching self-defence, we cover all aspects including awareness, threat identification, avoidance and law of reasonable force.

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ?

Legally there is no specific definition of reasonable force as this is judged on a base by case basis. However if you can prove that your actions were necessary given what you thought at the time, then this is acceptable and you have acted within the law.

SAFETY TIPS

Protecting your personal safety revolves around preventative thinking, taking reasonable precautions and being aware of your environment. Prevention is the first step to self-defence

  • Situational awareness and avoidance
  • Threat evaluation
  • Pre-emptive strikes
  • Attacks from any position
  • The flinch response and using the body’s natural reactive movements to your advantage
  • To Become more efficient and effective under stressful conditions
  • Overcoming fear
